Network Engineer - Barnet - Up to £70k

The role is a network engineer, responsible for:

  • Establishing the networking environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation, defining, documenting and enforcing system standards
  • Carrying out Implementation, maintenance, and support activity to the TW3 Colindale office move, and the Impact Assessment outputs
  • Review and implementation of Network Designs, Test Plans and Migrations Designs/ Strategies
  • Collaborating with project business analysts, solution architects, network architects, business stakeholders and customer representatives to understand and translate business requirements into appropriate technical solutions
  • Working with enterprise and solution architects to define infrastructure to deliver and support local government business applications
  • Good understanding of IT infrastructure, building fit-outs, building decommissions, office moves and print services
  • Technical understanding of Data Centre architecture, LAN /WAN, and Desktop
  • Experience of a major office fit-out project including definition of work settings and target operating models
  • Correcting routing and protocol issues, and firewall configurations
  • Migrating servers from legacy infrastructure (local datacentres) to strategic MPLS / Cloud datacentres
  • Responsible for supporting the transformation of Barnet's core operating model, including the relocation of core office staff to new site currently under construction.
  • Report on variations to signed off designs, and ensuring business sign-off business is provided
  • Document "as-is" network architecture where directed by Network TDA or Project Manager
  • Capable influencer and project team member, adaptable to fast moving project environments
  • Working to and within a Change Control environment ensuring proposed solutions are designed from a holistic perspective

Person Specification

  • Local government implementation experience
  • Must be able to demonstrably work well as part of a project team
  • Possess excellent attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good and confident communications skills, especially written for documentation purposes
  • Ability to work to agreed deadlines, cost, scope & quality, management of risk, stakeholder management i.e. project management principles & practices
  • Ability to personally manage a diverse workload and able to deal with a variety of user queries
  • Ability to deal with differing levels of IT awareness, from within own team and user base
  • Capable of working under pressure on some occasions, and flexibility in deviations from plan

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrable large-scale Network Architecture experience; 3-5 years' experience in an IT infrastructure and networking environment
  • Demonstrable experience in CCNP (ideally CCIE), ASA firewall, Checkpoint firewall, Cisco Wireless
  • Experience of a major office relocation project and network/systems analysis methodology
  • Supporting the development of requirement specification, analysis and design
  • Use of service desk tools for incident, problem management & change control
  • Able to evaluate data traffic patterns in network infrastructures; identify operational problems and suggesting improvements to make sure of optimal performance.
  • Check symptoms and irregularities in an appropriate manner which includes examining for organisations network environment.
  • Subject matter expert in all things Networking including:
    • Routing
    • Switching
    • Firewalls
    • Security
    • WiFi
    • Application Delivery and Load Balancing
    • Emerging technologies
    • Cloud
    • Network monitoring and analysis
