Linux Systems Engineer
Capita IT Resourcing are looking for a Linux Systems Engineer to work in Bedford supporting applications used to deliver hosted services to customers and provide operational and technical application/systems support to all customers. This is a great opportunity for a Linux Systems Engineer who has good support, maintenance and projects experience, and is looking for that next step to learn more new technologies and progress further. In this role you'll also work closely with the development team to push code into production via Ansible so must be able to demonstrate these skills.
You must have technical knowledge across the LAMP technology stack, Ansible, PHP, NGINX, Cloud Services (Azure) and networking technologies. You should have a good knowledge of security practices working in a regulated environment and the flexibility to work out of hours will be required, including on call.


Customer -20% of workload

·Contribute to the planning of application/infrastructure releases and configuration changes

·Resolve support requests from customers by phone, email and online making use of the call logging system

·Interact with internal teams and external 3rd party vendors to trouble shoot and resolve complex problems

·Provide input to administering and maintaining all production and internal environments

  • Design appropriate metrics for reporting on key performance and quality indicators, particularly in terms of in-depth trend analysis

Service -80% of workload

·Perform new hosted service implementations

·Patching and upgrade of existing applications

·Proactively monitor platform logs and metrics in order to identify emergent issues, performance improvement opportunities and feed into capacity planning

·Investigate and resolve, or minimise the impact of recurring issues

  • Responsible for the entire Web stack (open source Linux based technologies). Implementing, secure standard setup, High Availability, Load balancing, proxy technologies whilst continuously monitoring the service and working with the dev to implement improvements where identified.
  • Be part of the on-call and out-of-hours rota
  • Storage administration for the VMware stack and backup infrastructure
  • Accountable for the quality and availability of releases into the Test and Live environments
  • Design, develop, Implement and evolve our monitoring frameworks and other production focused toolsets to ensure highest levels of availability and error free processing and engage and actively participate with Product development on this
  • Keep up-to-date with the current best practices and tools available in the DevOps community
  • Close working relationship with the Development team - push code vis Ansible


·Knowledge of scripting languages (Python or Powershell)

  • Azure Resource Manager templates or Terraform
  • Kubernetes or Azure Container Service
  • Jenkins
  • Knowledge of Solaris 8 - 10
  • Experience of Sybase database / Azure SQL highly beneficial
  • Graph databases
  • Redis and caching technologies
  • Version control (mercurial/git)

·ITIL v3 experience
