Java Developer

Exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Java Developer to be part of a critical account for one of our leading technology clients in Sheffield.

You will be part of an integral team that develop and maintains a strategic Line of Business application for the client. As a Senior Developer, you will have responsibilities for the successful delivery and evolution of the client's solution with the expectation that they'll play a key role in increasing the quality of the system.


The ideal candidate will have the ability to lead selected projects, sprints or work-packages as and when required, developing the capability of the team and department through mentoring of other team members.
Working closely with Team Leads, Architects and Management, you will play a key role in helping to define the technology stack of the application also providing input into the strategic direction of the application.

Role Responsibilities

  • Work as part of an agile team to deliver high quality solutions based on the Java stack
  • Work alongside client stakeholders and business analysts to ensure delivery to client expectations
  • Work with Service Management to prioritise and resolve production issues
  • Implement industry best practise within application development and associated SDLC processes
  • Champion new tools and frameworks to improve productivity and software quality
  • Mentor fellow team members and assist in identifying their development needs
  • Contribution and evolution of implemented frameworks and defined standards
  • Input into application design and technical strategy
  • Produce clear, relevant and concise design, implementation and support documentation to support change and project delivery
  • Management of defined project tasks and activities, reporting progress against plan
  • Contribute to estimates and planning

Essential Skills and Experience


The role must have the following skills and experience:

  • 5+ years' experience in implementing complex software in a professional development environment
  • Strong skills in Java, Web Technologies and associated frameworks
  • Agile delivery practices (preferably Scrum) and working as part of an Agile team
  • A proven aptitude for developing high quality software with experience of unit testing
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to adapt to new situations
  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Proficient with relevant design principles and development best practice
  • Proficient with tools that automate or assist the development process
  • Troubleshooting complex software issues including issues in unfamiliar code
  • Ability to learn and understand new technologies

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience in architecting/designing complex software in a professional development organisation
  • PL-SQL and Oracle database development
  • Proficient in more than one database technology e.g.) Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL Server
  • Proficiency in Oracle APEX
  • Exposure to more than one relevant programming language and associated frameworks
  • Knowledge in Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (Jenkins/Puppet)
  • Experience in scalable web solutions and technologies, including Cloud technologies
  • Specific frameworks and technologies: SOAP, REST, SOA, javascript, JBoss, Spring, Linux, Docker
  • Technical team leadership experience
  • Experience of Behaviour or Test driven development (BDD/TDD) including appropriate Unit Test and Mocking Frameworks
  • Exposure to or experience of industry standards (OWASP, ISO 9001)
