Infrastructure/Server Engineer - Chichester/West Sussex - Up to £40k + Benefits


  • To provide 2nd and 3rd level support, fault resolution and project work.

  • To actively assist in the section's ability to provide support, fault resolution and project work

  • To offer assistance in the division's ability to provide support, fault resolution and project work in all other areas as appropriate.

  • Provide full operational support to resolution of all server equipment to ensure customer requirements are maintained in accordance with Service Level Agreements and to prescribed standards, prioritising and progressing the workload as required.

  • To provide technical support, ensuring skills, knowledge and tasks are cascaded within the wider team. Develop the support capability to agreed priorities and standards, assessing scale and impact of problems, prioritising and progressing through to final resolution liaising with colleagues, customers, engineers and suppliers as required.

  • To assist in developing, testing and implementing infrastructure components as required.


  • Proven expertise in enterprise level system administration across a variety of platforms (Windows / Unix / Linux / VMware / OVM)

  • Proven expertise in enterprise level support at a L2 or L3 level.

  • A demonstrable interest in gaining an advanced understanding of enterprise technologies.

  • Good understanding of TCP/IP networks.

  • Good understanding of backup technologies and processes (Preferably NetBackup)

  • Experience of maintaining IT systems in a critical service environment with specific reference to OS and Firmware patching / upgrades.

  • Proven experience of Customer Service ideology.

  • Strong communications skills, including the presentation of complex technical ideas, and the production of accurate written documentation.

  • Demonstrable experience of organising a busy and varied workload requiring self-motivation and excellent time management skills.


  • Experience of IT service provision and support within a local government environment.

  • Demonstrable experience of supporting DNS, DHCP, SMTP, web servers, database servers, and systems management and monitoring.

  • VMWare experience

  • Microsoft Active Directory and MS Exchange experience

  • Knowledge of techniques to ensure resilience, and enable disaster recovery.

  • Experience of working in a multi-platform IT environment with an ability to understand and resolve interoperability issues.

  • Familiarity with IT systems design, implementation, and management.


  • To assist in the evaluation, procurement, installation, configuration, implementation and support of hardware and software solutions to desired standards.

  • To produce and distribute formal documentation associated with evaluation, development, implementation or support of IT Systems.

  • Provide telephone support and/or attend customer sites as necessary, ensuring the customer is kept updated of progress on resolving the incident/problem.

  • Liaise with Team Leaders, Management and Service Desk throughout major incidents.

  • Adhere to corporate ITIL Change and Release processes and ensure the CMDB is updated and accurate at all times.

  • Observe physical and technical security procedures to safeguard the integrity and security of systems.

  • Maintain full awareness of the environmental and security conditioning of computer suites.

  • Keep abreast of both internal and external IT developments to ensure the team are able to provide full support to its customers and can make recommendations to Team Leaders and Managers of any new initiatives.

  • Promote and monitor adherence of good professional IT practices, corporate IS/IT standards and policies ensuring standards are followed and the services and systems provided are used to their full potential.

  • As instructed, cover/assist staff in technical roles in other teams.

  • To perform tasks when required outside normal working hours as necessitated by the function.

  • Carry out any other duties appropriate to the post at the direction of the Team Leader or Manager.
