Top soft skills for career success

Diogo Pereira

IT is the fastest growing career sector, which is great news for both established IT professionals and those just beginning their IT career path. But whether you’re working in hardware, software, e-commerce or security, if you want to get ahead in the competitive IT world, you need more than qualifications behind you. Successful employees also need to be able to excel in areas that robots and algorithms can’t. So, what should you be working on to make sure you’re a well-rounded professional? Here’s our soft skills guide to success.

1. Communication skills

Whatever the situation, you need to make sure you’re able to professionally communicate with your colleagues. Whether it’s email, phone or video call, what you say and how you say it, matters.

2. Empathy

Empathy helps us read people and situations, as well as make connections and foster collaboration.

3. Organisation skills

Being organised means you’ll be able to plan, prioritise and achieve your goals. Keeping your desk tidy is a start, but more than that, you’ll be able to stick to a timeline, get your projects done and keep calm should anything unexpected arise.

4. Flexibility

Employees who are open to new initiatives and ideas over the long term will do better than those that can’t, especially when things don’t go as planned. Be comfortable going outside of your comfort zone to learn something new and you’ll be looked at favourably.

5. Positivity

It’s hard to be positive when work is stressful or work is piling up, but a talent for keeping your cool and being able to laugh at unfortunate situations, is a truly great skill to have.

6. Work ethic

Being disciplined and motivated to work, even if other team members aren’t pulling their weight, will set a good example of yourself and get you noticed.

These traits will be great for getting you the job you’re after, but they’ll also be useful for actually getting the job done, making you more efficient and effective and maybe even make your work more enjoyable. While they may seem simple, the more you push yourself to achieve in these areas, the further you’ll go.
